Potential Areas of Conflict
May roll over those who don't agree. May embrace action too quickly--being in motion, doing something is better than sitting around thinking or talking. Becomes frustrated with those who take the easy way out, who do not consider long-term circumstances, or demonstrate lack of compassion.
Brief description: Deeply committed to the very long view and ethnical correctness. Internalizes and energizes complex ideas. Genuine empathetic interest in helping others to thrive as their authentic selves. Focused and single-minded, but single-minded, sometimes to the point of inflexibility. Moves slowly, thoughtfully. Dislikes tension. Frequently judgmental. Been around forever, so big history orients her internal compass and timeline.
Purpose: She is a guide with high expectations and low tolerance for stupidity or laziness. Clear on how things ought to be, she invests her time and energy to encourage others to share her long view, her deep understanding of earth’s history, natural history, and the human condition. Her intolerance of foolishness cuts to the quick; as a result, her presence is sometimes feared. She’s not a constant presence, but she hovers above so it feels as though she’s always there.
Gender/Heritage: She’s been around since the Big Bang (and looks surprisingly good, considering her age). She’s a god from a long line of gods.
Physical Description: Suggests the spiritual earth mother, rooted in ancient civilization, but wholly competent in today’s society.
Psychological: Mom struggles with the idea that any one individual, or even a group of individuals, is important. In fact, she has seen so much and met so many people (and other creatures), she cannot imagine why anyone would perceive one human as more important than another. It makes her happy to see people moving in the direction of positive change. She can be impatient, especially with those who don't follow the rules (for example, people who are cruel to one another), or don't follow through on their promises, or ignore details— anything that doesn’t advance or grow the species or life on earth. There’s a reason. During the Big Bang, she lost her other half. Each of the people, each of the characters must grow and advance so they may ultimately become one, which completes her. During her quiet times, she dreams of the possibility, and hopes it will come true, someday.
Social: Pretty much, she’s everybody’s mom. (All around the world, names for mother are similar, so she’ll answer to ma, momma, mom, mother, mater, and any utterance with a similar meaning.) She knows everybody, knows the back story, and, when asked, she’ll answer questions about what happened. Deals with complex ethical issues and cares deeply about humans who are struggling. She possesses great faith in her own instincts and intuition. Time after time, this confidence proves out. When she’s not around, she’s probably out shopping. Mom likes to shop.
Key Relationships: Spark—who possesses the necessary energy for change. She shares the desire for completion with Standard Joe, who quietly shares similar hopes for himself. They don’t discuss the similarity, but Mom has long protected Joe, and provided him with a last name. Haps finds her fascinating, but intimidating. She takes time with Haps to explain things in terms Haps can understand.
Place in Cafe: She controls the whole operation (and most of what happens elsewhere), but doesn’t make much a big deal about that. She runs the place from above, probably a loft office or a perch visually similar to her integrated look. She wanders about, spending time with others one-on-one and in groups. She’ll take on the occasional interview, too, and sing the occasional song, each with her ultimate purpose in mind.
0-to-60: Zeus comes to mind. Thunderbolts. Do not give this woman a reason to be angry! Fortunately, she’s quietly observing most of the time (but her presence is felt: mom is always watching.) She’ll put up with a lot before she erupts. She’s tolerant, but when she sees the full picture of depravity, extraordinary profiteering, widespread destruction, evil, extreme selfishness, she delivers fire-and-brimstone you’ll remember for the rest of your days. No debate, no interruption, just shut up and listen. Whether you believe she’s right or wrong, she’s right.
