ENTP
Enjoys thinking through useful solutions to difficult problems, especially if they are new or innovative. Competent, quick on his feet, logical, reasonable. Wants to interact with others and feel the flow of influence between them, but struggles with those who aren’t so clever, or are unprepared. High energy, can handle rapid change and new details coming in constantly. Casual, lots of personal freedom and time away to think.
Potential Areas of Conflict
An idea generator, he may lose track of options because there are so many of them. Doesn’t deal with details. May create confusion, may lose sight of priorities. Dismissive, especially if suggestions are illogical or seem foolish. Being right, or being reasonable, is more important than the feelings or needs of others. Procrastinator. May let good opportunities slide away because of lousy time and priority management. Very energetic, especially when new or divergent ideas pop into his head—so he interrupts others, stops listening, re-routes the conversation through thoughtlessness or honest enthusiasm. Finds it difficult to slow down, to relax with others. Crappy follow-through. Lacks focus, except sometimes.
Brief description: High energy, always seeing possibilities. Often shapes the discussion and directs it toward powerful changes. Fast-paced, exciting, active life. Never tires of working through new or different ways of thinking. Frequently conflicted between theoretical and practical, tries to combine the two. Casual. Comfortable with powerful people. Tells a terrific story, but the story’s fine points change with each telling. Sometimes exceeds boundaries, so his commanding presence can work against him. Gets along with (almost) everyone (most of the time). Ideas and solutions are merely his tools for his larger agenda: being the center of attention. Astonishing how quickly and easily he can flip—and switch sides when he is losing.
Purpose: A commanding presence, he begins, then dominates the discussion. Rather than presenting a constant speechmaker, we do this through song, or song-and-dance, often with unexpected celebrities or other experts. The goal: open the discussion in a big way. B.P.’s always ready for the noisy argument, the large-scale collision of ideas. He can take control, change the images on everyone’s screen, invoke magic. It’s never anything but fun for him, and very engaging for just about everyone nearby (except the select few who really wish he would just shut up, leave them alone, go away). There is always the danger of saying or doing or showing something that goes too far: it’s always well-intended, but impulse control is not always ideal. Still, he’s razor-sharp, smart and clever. Always on the verge of running for office, but something holds him back.
Gender/Heritage: Human. Big strong man with a major league personality and lung power to match. Family tree probably includes Miss Piggy, Rosie O’Donnell, Ethel Merman, Bette Midler, Professor Harold Hill, Max Bialystok (Nathan Lane in The Producers), P.T. Barnum, Chris Farley, all by way of NJ Governor Chris Christy. His contact list includes everyone in the world, maybe that’s the way. Once worked in the circus like his dad. B.P.’s twin sister committed suicide. She was so much larger than life, she popped.
Physical Description: Overstuffed presence, broad features, the big dog that demands all of the attention. Always fun to watch.
Psychological: “That’s enough about me. So what do you think about me…” The show never ends. Feels he serves a very important purpose, personally / professionally / socially / emotionally because he ignites people’s minds. Very high energy; can handle rapid change and steady barrage of new details. Not always clear about boundaries, or the importance of telling the truth and nothing but the truth, but rolls on because stopping could be fatal. Under the most challenging circumstances, Big Picture reveals an impressive (and humorous) temper. Down deep, there is an ocean of insecurity. In time, we’ll learn why.
Fears: Big Picture is terrified of being called out as the empty bag that deep down he suspects he might be, but he keeps that down deep for himself and especially for others.
Social: A performer who never shuts down. Even his warmhearted behaviors promote self-interest. Always draws a crowd. Is always a too loud. Always invites others into the conversation, often ignoring their discomfort. Charismatic: others follow because they want to, or believe they want to, but often feel a little empty afterwards. Sometimes surprises others because he requires time away from the action in order to recharge, to think, to develop ideas. Reads books, talks to experts in order to understand—but this is not something most people would guess.
Key Relationships: Believes he gets along famously with everybody, but everybody is not always so sure.
Place in Cafe: At the big table, always the most prominent position in the room. Often needs to be told to shut up, quiet down because other people are trying to read / hear / think / talk. He likes to be called B.P., but detractors find nasty meanings for each of those letters.
0-to-60: Oh yes, B.P. can bluster with the best of them. Nothing better than a good argument—it enriches body and soul (we see the impact on his body— it seems to expand). What gets him started? Heck, it doesn’t take much because this guy will use any means to get his point across, even if it means sucking the air out of the room or taking over all media in the district to shout out loud. Hot buttons: the inability to live beyond the present moment, unwillingness to see beyond the tip of your nose, nobody’s listening, people who require silence in order to think (inconceivable! how can you possibly think without talking and shouting?)
Accessory Characters: None. Everyone is an accessory to his life story.
